Who the Hell is Adan Leggs

*We have also the original words in spanish, just scroll down!

If you talk about off-road electric services in Baja then Adan Leggs is the first name that comes to mind for so many. After 6 years in charge of Horsepower Ranch Adan decided to go solo and open his own shop called “EFF Race Prep & Custom Works” to build a name for himself. We wanted to share our brief discussion with the racing community.

How did you get involved in Off-Road?

Since I was a kid I have been involved in this, by watching my godfather race in a Class11, and later during high school. While in high school I got my first off-road job by working in a Volkswagen specialized shop, where I simply reinforced my passion for this career and sport. A few years later I get my electronic engineering degree, and followed my dream of becoming a professional off-road specialist.

What about after that?

I started working in a regular factory for almost 2 years, luckily for me this factory closed pushing me to look for another option. This is when I tried to follow my passion, and started working with the popular shop Wide Open. While at Wide Open I focused on my career as an off-road speciality from 2005 to 2012. During this time I also had side gigs on my own increasing my electronic skills.

So you just learned from College or you have other inspirations?

No way! My dad was my biggest inspiration to do this. He had a computer shop and I remember he taught me the basics of electronics. I just made a small change of direction into the off-road path. Also at the VW shop during my first projects Marcos Carmona gave me the introduction to the off-road work which I hold a great respect for him as well.

What happened after Wide Open in 2012?

From 2012 to 2018 I went to work in Horsepower Ranch, and I was in charge of the three companies that were funded there. Horsepower Ranch, Horsepower Custom and Horsepower adventures. I always wanted to stay focused in my speciality, but with these other companies I had to work in a lot of different stuff like helping to restore first gen broncos at Horsepower Custom or coordinating the logistics for Horsepower adventures, lots of learning there. Especially when the UTV popularity began to grow.

Then you decided to go solo, right?

Before the 2018 Baja 1000 I opened my own shop called “EFF Race Prep & Custom Work.” Dynamic Racing was my first client, as myself and my team gave full prep and maintenance services to all of their CanAms for both pre running and racing. 2019 was a learning experience around UTV’s but also still focusing on my electronic work, there were a lot of long nights for sure.

How are things this 2020?

Right now I’m focusing on updating myself to all the new technologies available for off-road. Like everyone else, we are struggling with the Covid-19 contingency, and things are changing rapidly but we are surviving.

How’s Covid-19 affecting your work?

Well, I had to expand our services to non-offroad related jobs. I now share my shop with Efrain Navarro, an excellent carbon and glass fiber artisan and Victor De Thomas, full time prep and fabricator. I share the shop with them helping each other with our clients, and just trying to stay afloat.

What projects do you have in your shop currently?

Right now we are putting together a Class 5 Open made by Jake fabworks. Also, Victor is in process of fabricating a badass Volkswagen Bug with an LS3 engine and Class 1 suspension, as well a Class 10 and a Ford Ranger PreRunner with my team. I’m making the whole electric system for all projects myself.

How about racing, have you jumped in a driver or codriver seat?

Yeah! In ‘07 or maybe ‘08 I had a chance to co-drive for Miguel Sandoval in his Class 7sx. We ended up with the RECORD championship that year in class. Also my favorite was the 2010 Baja 500 where I shared the steering wheel with Veloz Arzate and Miguel Sandoval, a dream team in Baja. We went in a Baja Challenge, a 4 cylinder buggy, against the whole Class 1 unlimited field, we finished 4th in class and 13th Overall, a great accomplishment considering we had 195HP against the +800HP monsters. Having the experience of Veloz and Miguel gave us a huge advantage because in between all three of us we knew every inch of the whole track. Last year I also co-drive with Dynamic Racing this last San Felipe 250 and I’m hoping to get more driving time soon.

Who the Hell is…? is an editorial feature series where we recognize the business people of off-road who have helped shape the industry and culture. Entrepreneurs, crew chiefs, engineers, fabricators, event organizers, promoters, dreamers, etc. all play a part in the growth and maintenance of off-road racing culture.
