Trey Gibbs Secures Victory & Podium at ERX Motor Park
Elk River, MN
ERX Motor Park in Elk River, Minnesota, played host to the mid-point of the 2024 Championship Off-Road and the ERX Nationals. It was a wild weekend of competitive racing rewarding the mid-western fans with high-speed, action-packed thrills. The course at ERX Motor Park is a fan favorite that offers many technical challenges. Pro Lite racer Trey Gibbs fought through some difficulties and ultimately ended up on the podium twice, with a 2nd place finish and a well-earned victory.
The weekend started quickly, with Trey throwing down a top qualifying session in his Maxxis Tires / STEEL-IT #5 TGR Pro Lite. Under the blazing sun, Friday's events unfolded not so smoothly. The green flag dropped and the race quickly turned into a battle of attrition. Gibbs, who came into ERX on a four-race winning streak, found himself amidst thick traffic and contact. After being black-flagged for heavy door-to-door racing, Gibbs had to stop off the track in the penalty box before jumping back to the back of the field. Meanwhile, chaos was up front, and the race exchanged the lead position five times. Undeterred, Gibbs charged through the pack, moving from eighth to second place before the checkered flag, marking his sixth podium finish of the season in just six races.
Saturday brought an unexpected twist as rain temporarily delayed the schedule. Once the skies cleared, the intensity on the track ramped up. Gibbs and his team were unfazed by the previous day’s challenges and had worked through them with bravado. Trey would start fourth due to the inversion. By the second lap, he had taken the lead and maintained a commanding position throughout the race. His flawless performance earned him his fifth win of the season, extending his points lead to 67 over Johnny Holtger.
Trey Gibbs reflects on the weekend: "It was another great weekend for my team and me. ERX is one of my favorite race tracks, but I've just now had a solid weekend racing here. The past two years have been tough with mechanical issues, but I felt good about this weekend, and my gut was right. We started fastest in both practice and qualifying. Race day was a challenge, especially after the black flag, but my spotter, Cole Mamer, and I worked together to pick off competitors one by one and got back up to second place. Mamer has been a big part of the program this year.
Saturday was a completely different story. Starting fourth again, I quickly passed my competitors, and once I was out front, there was no looking back. I want to give a big thanks to Maxxis Tires, STEEL-IT Coatings, See Devil Lights, Impact Safety, Vision Wheels, VP Racing Fuels, Liqui Moly and Howe Performance for their support. All in all, it was a fantastic weekend to be racing!"
Trey Gibbs now leads the Pro Lite division by 67 points, with three event weekends remaining in the Championship Off-Road series. The series returns to Dirt City Motorplex's exciting venue in Lena, Wisconsin. Known for its challenging course and enthusiastic crowds, Dirt City Motorplex will host Rounds 8 and 9 of the 2024 Championship Off-Road series on July 27-28.
