Alright, gearheads and off-road enthusiasts, let's get down to brass tacks and give you the lowdown on one of the most capable and versatile rigs hitting the dirt this year – the 2024 Polaris GENERAL XP 4 1000 Ultimate. Now, for those of you familiar with the breadth and depth of Polaris’s lineup, you know they've got machines for just about every terrain and taste. From your weekend warriors to the ultimate off-road behemoths, Polaris has engineered a lineup that's as comprehensive as it gets. In the realm of 4-seat comfort the General has quickly become the Swiss Army Knife of UTV’s and this year's model is no exception.

A few months back, Polaris handed over a brand-new 2024 GENERAL XP 4 1000 Ultimate, (available in Polaris Blue or Matte Silver Quartz) and we immediately knew it was destined for more than just casual trail rides. We opted to take it out for a rigorous test by scouting the course for the Unlimited Off-Road Racing - California 300 race in Barstow, California, which returns this fall for a 3rd year in a row. Barstow is a legendary spot for Southern California off-road testing, and known for being super rough. After spending nearly a month navigating every inch of this historic testing grounds, throwing everything from steep climbs to deep ruts at this machine, it became clear that "enough" wasn't in its vocabulary. Not satisfied with just course scouting, we also took it out to Ocotillo Wells for a dedicated film shoot, tackling some of the most challenging conditions in California, including sand dunes, cliff climbs, and high-speed whoops. This machine handled it all extremely well - even fully loaded with four adults and gear.

This year's General Ultimate doesn’t just perform like a champ; it looks the part too. Decked out in a Matte Silver Quartz finish, this machine exudes a presence that’s both commanding and refined. Polaris has maintained the rugged and aggressive design cues that have become synonymous with the brand, ensuring that this GENERAL turns heads whether it’s tearing through the desert or sitting quietly in the lot. In short - it’s a very snazzy looking UTV, right off the lot.

When we get into the technical nitty-gritty, the GENERAL XP 4 1000 Ultimate truly shines. The 30-inch Pro Armor Crawler XGF tires mounted on 15-inch aluminum wheels are ready for the toughest trails, embodying the perfect balance between durability and performance. The 13.5-inch ground clearance allows for confident navigation over challenging obstacles, ensuring that your adventure doesn’t end when the road gets rough. The suspension system, featuring Walker Evans Velocity Series Shocks, offers long travel with high clearance and a stabilizer bar, delivering an impressive 14 inches of travel. This setup not only absorbs the harsh impacts of rugged terrain but also provides a level of ride comfort that’s rare in such a capable off-road machine at this price.

Stepping inside the GENERAL XP 4 1000 Ultimate, you’re greeted with an interior that’s as focused on comfort as it is on utility. Bolstered bucket seats provide superior support during rough rides, while the adjustable steering column and intuitive dash layout ensure that every control is within easy reach. The comprehensive seat belt system offers security and peace of mind, locking you in for the ride ahead. The doors feel solid. The seats are roomy and comfortable. And because the seating position is more upright than a RZR it’s really easy on the body on those longer rides. Especially when you’re jumping in and out of the machine all day.

The crown jewel of the interior is undoubtedly the Ride Command system. Featuring a 7-inch glove-touch display, this system offers GPS navigation, vehicle diagnostics, and the ability to stay connected with other riders, ensuring that you’re well-informed and in control, no matter where the trail takes you. During our time in Barstow and Ocotillo Wells, the Ride Command system proved invaluable, offering a level of convenience and connectivity that truly sets the GENERAL XP 4 1000 Ultimate apart from the competition.

Under the hood, the GENERAL XP 4 1000 Ultimate is powered by a 999cc engine that delivers a robust 100 horsepower. Whether we were scouting the California 300 course or navigating the diverse terrain of Ocotillo Wells, the GENERAL never felt underpowered. Even fully loaded with equipment and riders, the machine’s performance remained brisk and responsive, showcasing Polaris’s commitment to engineering excellence.

And of course like many of the Polaris vehicles, the 2024 General Ultimate features the Lock & Ride cargo system, making it incredibly versatile for carrying gear. With a 600 lb bed box capacity and a 1100 lb total payload capacity, it's equipped to handle substantial equipment and supplies for any adventure. Additionally, the Polaris Heavy Duty 4500 LB winch, ProFit Sport Roof, and many other bumper and add-on options, ensure you're prepared for anything the trail might throw your way. So it’s entirely possible to kit this thing out right from the dealership with everything you need to overland and explore.

When it comes to performance, the 2024 Polaris GENERAL XP 4 1000 Ultimate stands tall against rivals like the Can-Am Defender MAX Limited HD10 and Honda Talon 1000X-4. Its Pro Star engine outmuscles the Can-Am's 76 hp, while providing a more spacious and comfortable cabin than the slightly more powerful 104 hp Honda. The GENERAL's 14 inches of suspension travel, and 13.5 inches of ground clearance are also superior to the Defender's 10 and 11 inches respectively. Compared to its 2023 predecessor, the updated Walker Evans Velocity Series shocks provide improved damping. While the GENERAL matches the 1,100 lb payload and 1,500 lb towing ratings of other top 4-seat UTVs, it blends impressive capability with family-friendly versatility better than most, solidifying its position as a segment leader.

The GENERAL XP 4 1000 Ultimate offers a balanced and compelling package that meets the demands of even the most finicky off-road enthusiasts. Starting at $32K, it represents a significant investment in off-road performance, but one that's justified by its comprehensive capabilities and features. However, it's not standing alone in offering a spacious ride for four. The GENERAL XP 4 1000 PREMIUM, with a starting price of around $30K, also provides a robust option for those looking to explore the trails with company. While it offers a slightly different set of features compared to the Ultimate, it remains a compelling choice for riders seeking the quality and reliability that Polaris is known for, but at a slightly more accessible price point.

Choosing a machine like the 2024 GENERAL XP 4 1000 Ultimate, is more than just selecting a UTV. It's about investing in a top-tier off-road experience that blends power, comfort, and technology into one unmatched package. It stands as a prime example of Polaris's ability to deliver an off-road machine that's as at home on the challenging trails of Southern California's testing grounds as it is cruising down a forest trail. For those seeking the ultimate in off-road performance without venturing into the ultra-premium price range, the GENERAL XP 4 1000 Ultimate is an option that deserves serious consideration. If you’re not worried about warp speeds and just want an all around kick ass machine that can get you down the road with friends and gear - this just might be the UTV for you. Go see your Polaris dealer and ask them to show you this UTV in person. You’ll be glad you did.
